Mark Dean is an American computer engineer and inventor. He is best known for his work at IBM, where he was a chief engineer and one of the principal designers of the IBM personal computer. He holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents and was instrumental in the development of the ISA bus, which is still used in many of today's computers. He was also the first African American to become an IBM Fellow. Dean was born in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1979. He then went on to earn a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1982. Dean began his career at IBM in 1980, and was soon promoted to chief engineer. He was responsible for the development of the ISA bus, which allowed for the expansion of the IBM PC. He also helped develop the Color Graphics Adapter, which allowed for the display of color images on the IBM PC. In 1995, Dean was named an IBM Fellow, the highest honor given to an IBM employee. He was the first African American to receive this honor. He has also received numerous awards and honors, including the National Medal of Technology in 1997. Dean is currently a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Tennessee. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
