Ludvík Vaculík is a Czech writer, journalist, and political activist. He is best known for his 1968 essay, "Two Thousand Words", which was a major factor in the Prague Spring of 1968. He was born on July 23, 1926 in Brumov, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. Vaculík studied at the University of Brno and worked as a journalist for the Czechoslovakian newspaper, Rudé Právo. He was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia from 1945 to 1968. In 1968, Vaculík wrote the essay, "Two Thousand Words", which criticized the Soviet Union's invasion of Czechoslovakia and called for reform of the Communist Party. The essay was widely circulated and was a major factor in the Prague Spring of 1968. Vaculík was arrested in 1969 and sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in the Prague Spring. After his release, he was banned from publishing and was forced to work as a manual laborer. In 1989, Vaculík was allowed to resume his writing career and has since published several books and essays. Vaculík is considered one of the most important Czech writers of the 20th century. He has received numerous awards, including the Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the Czech Republic's highest honor. He is also a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
