First elected to the House of Commons in a by-election in May 2002 and was re-elected in 2004. In 2003, she was named Minister of Social Development and then Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister Responsible for Status of Women on July 20, 2004. She has served as a member of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates and on the Standing Committee on the Scrutiny of Regulations.

After leaving provincial politics in 1998, she returned to her first love, communications. She hosted her own television show "Liza" on Radio-Canada. She also held positions in the field of communications for several companies, including Labatt Breweries and CKAC.
