Lennie Niehaus is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger, and music educator. He is best known for his work with the jazz musician and composer, Stan Kenton. He has composed and arranged music for over 50 films, including The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and The Sand Pebbles. Niehaus was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and began playing the saxophone at the age of nine. He attended the University of Missouri, where he studied music and composition. After college, he moved to Los Angeles and began working as a studio musician. In the 1950s, Niehaus began working with Stan Kenton, arranging and composing music for the band. He also wrote music for films, including The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and The Sand Pebbles. Niehaus has released several albums as a leader, including Lennie Niehaus, Vol. 1-5, and Lennie Niehaus and His Orchestra. He has also written several books on jazz improvisation and arranging. Niehaus has received numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for his arrangement of "The Shadow of Your Smile" with Stan Kenton.
