John Ziman was a British physicist and science writer. He was born in Cambridge, England, on 16 May 1925. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he obtained a B.A. in physics in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1951. Ziman was a professor of physics at the University of Bristol from 1956 to 1971, and then at Imperial College London from 1971 to 1991. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1965 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts from 1975. Ziman was a prolific writer, publishing over 20 books and numerous articles on the philosophy of science, the history of science, and the public understanding of science. His most famous work is Real Science: What It Is and What It Means (2000). Ziman died on 28 April, 2005, at the age of 80. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters. John Ziman was a highly respected scientist and science writer. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Arts, and his work was widely acclaimed. In 1964 he was appointed professor of theoretical physics at University of Bristol, where he wrote his Elements Of Advanced Quantum Theory (1969) which explains the rudiments of quantum field theory with an elementary condensed matter slant. During this period, his interests shifted towards the philosophy of science. He argued about the social dimension of science, and the social responsibility of scientists in numerous essays and books.

John Michael Ziman (16 May 1925 – 2 January 2005) was a British-born New Zealand physicist and humanist who worked in the area of condensed matter physics. He was a spokesman for science, as well as a teacher and author.

Ziman was born in Cambridge, England, in 1925. His parents were Solomon Netheim Ziman and, Nellie Frances, née Gaster. The family emigrated to New Zealand when Ziman was a baby. He obtained his early education at Hamilton High School and the Victoria University College. He obtained his PhD from Balliol College, Oxford and did his early research on the theory of electrons in liquid metals at the University of Cambridge.
