John Birt is a British television producer and executive. He is best known for his work as Director-General of the BBC from 1992 to 2000. He was born in Liverpool, England, on 10 December 1944. Birt began his career in television in 1967, working as a production assistant at Granada Television. He rose through the ranks to become a producer and director, and in 1975 he was appointed Head of Programmes at London Weekend Television. In 1980, he joined the BBC as Controller of the English Regions. In 1992, Birt was appointed Director-General of the BBC, a post he held until 2000. During his tenure, he oversaw the introduction of digital television and the launch of the BBC's 24-hour news channel. He also implemented a number of cost-cutting measures, which were unpopular with staff. Since leaving the BBC, Birt has held a number of positions in the media industry. He is currently a non-executive director of ITV plc, and a member of the board of the British Film Institute. He is also a trustee of the Royal Opera House and a member of the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology. Birt has been awarded a number of honours for his work in television, including a knighthood in 2000. He is married to the journalist and broadcaster, Sue Lawley.

While he was Director-General of the BBC, Birt was famously described by renowned playwright Dennis Potter as a "croak-voiced Dalek". This comparison led to him being portrayed as Davros, the megalomaniac mad scientist and creator of the Daleks in a Christmas tape made by BBC staff. Reference was again made to this by actor Tom Baker and former BBC director and producer David Maloney on the DVD commentary for Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks: Part Five (1975).
