Joan Aiken was an English writer of novels, short stories, and poetry for both children and adults. She wrote over 100 books, including The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, which won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1963. She was also the recipient of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the Edgar Allan Poe Award, and the Hans Christian Andersen Award. Aiken was born in Rye, Sussex, England, on 4 September 1924. She was the daughter of the American poet Conrad Aiken and the English writer Jessie McDonald. She was educated at Wychwood School in Oxford and at the University of Oxford. Aiken began writing at an early age, and her first book, All You've Ever Wanted, was published in 1945. She went on to write over 100 books, including the popular Wolves of Willoughby Chase series, which was adapted into a film in 1988. She also wrote several adult novels, including The Smile of the Stranger and The Teeth of the Gale. Aiken was a prolific writer, and her works have been translated into many languages. She was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the Edgar Allan Poe Award, and the Hans Christian Andersen Award. At the time of her death in 2004, Aiken had written over 100 books and had been translated into more than 20 languages. She was 80 years old.
