Jim Davenport is a former Major League Baseball player who was born on August 22, 1958 in San Antonio, Texas. He played for the San Francisco Giants from 1981 to 1985 and the Philadelphia Phillies from 1986 to 1987. Davenport attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a three-year letterman in baseball. He was drafted by the Giants in the fourth round of the 1979 amateur draft. Davenport made his major league debut on April 9, 1981, and played in the majors for seven seasons. He was a career .258 hitter with 24 home runs and 191 RBIs in 845 games. He was a member of the Giants' 1982 National League championship team. Davenport retired from baseball in 1987 and returned to Texas, where he worked in the oil and gas industry. He currently resides in San Antonio. As of 2021, Jim Davenport's net worth is estimated to be around $2 million.

Jim Davenport (1958 – December 31, 2012) was an American journalist and reporter with the Associated Press, based in South Carolina.

On October 26, 2012, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley presented Davenport with the Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest civilian honor, at a ceremony held at his home in Columbia, South Carolina.

Davenport died on December 31, 2012, at the age of 54 after a two-year battle with cancer.

2009

In 2009, Davenport was the first reporter to break the story that then-Governor Mark Sanford had been out of state for several days, uncovering a sex scandal. Davenport reported that Sanford had used South Carolinian government-owned planes for personal trips and had used taxpayer funds for upgrades to first-class seating on flights. Sanford had to pay a $74,000 fine for ethics violation, which is the largest ethics penalty charged in South Carolina state history.
