James Wolcott is an American journalist, novelist, and cultural critic. He is best known for his work as a columnist for Vanity Fair magazine. He was born on December 10, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland. Wolcott attended the University of Virginia, where he earned a degree in English literature. After college, he moved to New York City and began writing for various publications, including The Village Voice and The New Republic. In 1984, Wolcott began writing for Vanity Fair, where he has been a contributing editor since 1988. He has also written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. Wolcott has written several books, including Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants: The Looting of the News in a Time of Terror (2004), Lucking Out: My Life Getting Down and Semi-Dirty in Seventies New York (2011), and Critical Mass: Four Decades of Essays, Reviews, Hand Grenades, and Hurrahs (2013).
