Howard Blake is an English composer, conductor, and pianist. He is best known for his score for the 1982 animated film The Snowman, which includes the song "Walking in the Air". He has composed music for films, television, theatre, and ballet, and has written several concert works. Blake was born in London in 1938. He studied at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, and later at the University of London. He has composed music for films such as The Duellists (1977), The Riddle of the Sands (1979), and The Mission (1986). He has also composed music for television series such as The Jewel in the Crown (1984) and The Singing Detective (1986). Blake has written several concert works, including a symphony, a violin concerto, and a cello concerto. He has also written music for ballets, including The Snowman (1982) and The Nutcracker (1984). He has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Blake has received several awards for his work, including an Ivor Novello Award for The Snowman in 1983, and a BAFTA Award for The Mission in 1987. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to music.
