Gregory Bateson was an English anthropologist, social scientist, linguist, visual anthropologist, semiotician, and cyberneticist whose work intersected that of many other fields. He is best known for his work in the fields of cybernetics, systems theory, and anthropology. He is also credited with coining the term "double bind" in his 1956 book, "Steps to an Ecology of Mind". Bateson was born in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, England, on 9 May 1904. He was the son of Beatrice Durham and the distinguished geneticist William Bateson. He was educated at Charterhouse School and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he studied natural sciences and anthropology. Bateson's career spanned many disciplines, including anthropology, psychology, linguistics, cybernetics, and systems theory. He was a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a visiting professor at Harvard University. He was also a founding member of the Club of Rome, a think tank devoted to global issues. Bateson was a prolific writer, publishing more than 20 books and numerous articles. His most famous works include "Steps to an Ecology of Mind" (1972), "Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity" (1979), and "Angels Fear: Towards an Epistemology of the Sacred" (1987). Bateson died on 4 July 1980 in London, England. He was 76 years old.
