McHugh attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, graduating in 2002. He has appeared in a number of television shows, including Fresh Meat, Gary: Tank Commander, and What We Did on Our Holiday. He has also appeared in films such as The Inbetweeners Movie and Sunshine on Leith. McHugh is an avid skateboarder and has appeared in several skateboarding videos.
