Gene Baker was an American writer and journalist. He was born in Oregon in 1910 and attended the University of Oregon. He began his career as a reporter for the Oregonian newspaper in Portland. He later moved to New York City and worked for the New York Times and the New Yorker magazine. Baker wrote several books, including The Great American Novel (1941), The American Scene (1944), and The American Dream (1947). He also wrote several plays, including The Great American Play (1948) and The American Dream (1949). Baker was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He died in New York City in 1984.
