Gary Knell is an American businessman and nonprofit executive. He is the Chairman of National Geographic Partners, a joint venture between 21st Century Fox and the National Geographic Society. He is also the former President and CEO of National Public Radio (NPR). Knell was born in Sacramento, California, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976 with a degree in political science. He then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1979. Knell began his career as a lawyer in the San Francisco office of the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. He then served as the Chief of Staff to California State Senator Art Torres from 1981 to 1983. Knell joined Sesame Workshop in 1983, where he served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company, and was instrumental in the launch of Sesame Street in India and South Africa. In 2011, Knell was appointed President and CEO of NPR. During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of NPR One, the organization's mobile app, and the expansion of NPR's digital presence. He also led the organization through a period of financial stability and growth. In 2014, Knell was appointed Chairman of National Geographic Partners, a joint venture between 21st Century Fox and the National Geographic Society. In this role, he oversees the strategic direction of the company, which includes National Geographic magazine, National Geographic television channels, and National Geographic digital media. Knell is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Geographic Society, the International Rescue Committee, and the Aspen Institute.

Before joining National Geographic as president and CEO in January 2014, Knell served as president and CEO of National Public Radio from 2011 to 2013. He led NPR's worldwide media operations, which include partnerships with 900 public radio stations. A strong advocate of innovation, he was a key driver in leveraging new technologies to advance NPR's core mission and grew audience for all of public media.

From 2011 to 2013 he was president and CEO of National Public Radio NPR. Prior to that he served as CEO of Sesame Workshop from 2000–2011.

Knell was CEO of Sesame Workshop for 12 years before joining NPR in 2011. He joined the company in 1989 and assumed the role of COO in 1998 before moving into the CEO role in 2000. During his tenure at Sesame, the organization expanded its revenue base, audience and global recognition. Knell was instrumental in focusing the organization on Sesame Street's worldwide mission, including the creation of co-productions in South Africa, India, Northern Ireland and Egypt.

Knell graduated from Grant High School in Los Angeles, California, and earned a BA in political science from UCLA in 1975, followed by a law degree from Loyola Law School in L.A. in 1978. While at UCLA, he worked on the school's newspaper, the Daily Bruin.
