Garnett S. Stokes is an American academic administrator who currently serves as the interim president of the University of Missouri. She was born on December 20, 1955 in Washington, D.C. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Maryland in 1977 and her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Georgia in 1981. Stokes began her career as a professor of psychology at the University of Georgia in 1981. She then served as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of New Mexico from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2011, she served as the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Florida. She then served as the provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Georgia from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, Stokes was appointed as the interim president of the University of Missouri. She is the first woman to serve as president of the university.
