Ettore Sottsass was an Italian architect and designer who was a major figure in the development of postmodern design. He was born in Innsbruck, Austria, on 14 September 1917. He studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Turin, graduating in 1939. Sottsass began his career as an architect, working for the Italian firm BBPR from 1945 to 1947. He then moved to Milan, where he worked for the design firm Olivetti from 1947 to 1956. During this time, he designed the iconic Olivetti Valentine typewriter. In the 1960s, Sottsass began to focus more on design, creating furniture, lighting, and other objects. He was a founding member of the Memphis Group, a collective of designers who sought to challenge the modernist aesthetic. He also designed the iconic red plastic "Superbox" for the Italian furniture company Poltronova. In the 1980s, Sottsass returned to architecture, designing the Carlton Room for the Carlton Hotel in London. He also designed the interior of the Memphis store in Milan.
