Ernie Shore was an American professional baseball player and actor. He played in Major League Baseball as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox from 1914 to 1917. He is best remembered for replacing Babe Ruth in the middle of an inning on June 23, 1917, and retiring all 26 batters he faced. Shore was born in East Bend, North Carolina, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He made his major league debut with the Red Sox on April 14, 1914. He was a reliable pitcher for the Red Sox, posting a career record of 44–30 with a 2.53 ERA. In addition to his baseball career, Shore also had a brief acting career. He appeared in the silent film The Winning Wallop (1919) and the talkie The Big Game (1930). Shore died in East Bend, North Carolina, on October 17, 1980, at the age of 89.

Starting pitcher Babe Ruth walked the first batter and was ejected for arguing with the home-plate umpire about his balls/strikes calls, and Shore relieved him. During the next player's at-bat, the runner at first base was caught stealing. Shore then retired the next 26 batters, in a row.
