Eddie Mathews was an American professional baseball third baseman who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. Mathews was born in Texarkana, Texas, and grew up in Santa Barbara, California. He attended Santa Barbara High School, where he was a standout in baseball, basketball, and football. He signed with the Boston Braves in 1949 and made his major league debut in 1952. Mathews was a power hitter with a batting average of .271, 512 home runs, and 1,453 runs batted in (RBIs). He was selected to the All-Star team nine times and won the National League (NL) home run title in 1953, 1959, and 1960. He was the NL Most Valuable Player in 1959. Mathews was traded to the Houston Astros in 1966 and played his final season with the Detroit Tigers in 1968. He retired with a career batting average of .271, 512 home runs, and 1,453 RBIs.
