Don Haskins was an American basketball coach. He was best known for his tenure as the head coach of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Miners men's basketball team from 1961 to 1999. During his 38-year career, he won 719 games, 14 Western Athletic Conference championships, and one NCAA championship in 1966. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997. Haskins was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and attended Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). He played basketball for the Aggies from 1950 to 1952, and was a member of the 1952 team that won the NCAA championship. After graduating, he served in the United States Air Force for two years before returning to Oklahoma A&M as an assistant coach. In 1961, Haskins was hired as the head coach of the UTEP Miners. He quickly turned the program around, leading the Miners to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1965. The following year, the Miners won the NCAA championship, becoming the first team from a predominantly African-American conference to do so. Haskins continued to lead the Miners to success throughout his tenure, winning 14 Western Athletic Conference championships and making 14 NCAA tournament appearances. He retired in 1999 with 719 career wins, the sixth-most in NCAA history at the time. Haskins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997. He was also inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He died in 2008 at the age of 78.
