Dizzy Dean was an American professional baseball player and sports commentator. He played Major League Baseball as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Browns. He was best known for his colorful personality and his ability to pitch with great speed and accuracy. Dean was born in Lucas, Arkansas, on January 16, 1910. He was the fifth of seven children born to Albert and Annie Dean. He began playing baseball at an early age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already playing semi-professional baseball. In 1930, Dean signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and made his major league debut in 1932. He quickly became one of the most dominant pitchers in the National League, leading the league in strikeouts in 1933 and 1934. He was also the National League MVP in 1934. In 1937, Dean was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he continued to be a dominant pitcher. He led the National League in wins in 1938 and 1939, and was named to the All-Star team in both years. In 1947, Dean retired from baseball and began a career as a sports commentator. He was a popular figure on television and radio, and was known for his colorful language and his ability to tell stories. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
