He attended the University of Florida, where he earned a degree in broadcasting. After college, he began his career as a radio announcer for the University of Florida's football and basketball teams. In the early 1980s, Steele began working as a play-by-play announcer for the Orlando Magic. He has been with the team ever since, and is currently the longest-tenured announcer in the NBA. He has also worked as an area announcer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Florida Panthers. Steele has won numerous awards throughout his career, including the Florida Sportscaster of the Year award in 1997 and 1998. He was also inducted into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
