He is best known for his singles career, which saw him reach a career-high ranking of World No. 28 in 1985. Carter began playing tennis at the age of 12 and turned professional in 1979. He won his first professional title in 1982 at the Australian Open, and went on to win a total of four singles titles and two doubles titles during his career. He also reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1985 and the fourth round of the US Open in 1986. Carter retired from professional tennis in 1989 and is now a tennis coach.
