Buzz Aldrin is an American engineer, former astronaut, and fighter pilot. He was the second person to walk on the Moon, following mission commander Neil Armstrong, on July 20, 1969. Aldrin graduated from West Point in 1951 and served in the U.S. Air Force, where he flew 66 combat missions in the Korean War. He earned his doctorate in astronautics from MIT in 1963. Aldrin was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1963 and flew on the Gemini 12 mission in 1966. He was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 11, the first manned mission to land on the Moon. After retiring from NASA in 1971, Aldrin became a writer and lecturer. He has written several books, including Return to Earth (1973) and Magnificent Desolation (2009). He has also appeared in several films and television shows, including The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory. Aldrin is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He is also a member of the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. He is currently 91 years old.
