Bobby Bowden is an American former college football coach. He was the head coach at Florida State University from 1976 to 2009, compiling a career record of 389–129–4. He is best known for his success with the Florida State Seminoles, whom he led to 14 consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins, two national championships, and 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2006. Bowden was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham. He attended Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, where he played football and earned a degree in physical education. He then earned a master's degree in physical education from Alabama State University in Montgomery. Bowden began his coaching career as an assistant at Howard College in 1955. He then moved to South Georgia College in 1957, where he served as head coach for two seasons. In 1959, he returned to Howard College, where he served as head coach for five seasons. In 1964, he moved to Florida State University, where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons. In 1976, Bowden was named head coach at Florida State, where he remained until his retirement in 2009. During his tenure, he led the Seminoles to 14 consecutive seasons with 10 or more wins, two national championships, and 12 Atlantic Coast Conference championships. He was named the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award in 1987 and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award in 1993. Bowden retired from coaching in 2009 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He currently serves as an ambassador for Florida State University.
