She began her career in the 1920s, appearing in silent films and then in sound films. She was known for her roles in films such as The Private Life of Don Juan (1934), The Great Garrick (1937), and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). She also appeared in television series such as The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-1960) and The Avengers (1961-1969). Barnes was married twice, first to actor George Barnes and then to producer and director Hal B. Wallis. She had two children, a son, George, and a daughter, Binnie. Barnes died on July 27, 1998 in Los Angeles, California, USA. She was 95 years old.
