Sambuev won the 2017 Canadian Championship (Zonal 2.2) on July 1, 2017 in Montreal. He finished =1st IM Nikolay Noritsyn in the 9-round Swiss with 8/9. They played four rapid games (15m + 10s) with White winning each time, but won the blitz play-off 1.5/0.5.

2013

In the World Cup 2013, he played Alexander Morozevich in the first round. Sambuev won the first game and lost the second. Then he lost the rapidplay playoff by 1½-½ and as a result he was eliminated from the competition.
