Amber Ruffin is an American comedian and writer best known for her work on Late Night with Seth Meyers. She was born on January 9, 1979 in Omaha, Nebraska. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she earned a degree in theater. Ruffin began her career as a stand-up comedian in Chicago, performing at various clubs and venues. She then moved to New York City, where she wrote for the MTV show, Short Circuitz. In 2014, she joined the writing staff of Late Night with Seth Meyers, becoming the first African-American woman to write for a late-night talk show. Ruffin has also appeared on various television shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Comedy Central's @midnight. She has also appeared in the films Sisters and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. Ruffin is married to fellow comedian and writer, Jenny Hagel. The couple has two children.

Ruffin first began performing in 2001 in local theater productions in her hometown. She later moved to Chicago where she studied improv at the iO Theater. She moved to Amsterdam in 2008 to work as a writer and performer on the improv comedy troupe Boom Chicago. After returning to the United States, Ruffin performed as part of The Second City in both Denver and Chicago, where she first met future Late Night co-writer Jenny Hagel. In 2011, she moved to Los Angeles, where she joined the YouTube comedy team RobotDown and appeared on an episode of Key & Peele.
