Alvin Toffler was an American writer and futurist, known for his works discussing the digital revolution, communication revolution, corporate revolution and technological singularity. He wrote more than a dozen books, including Future Shock (1970), The Third Wave (1980) and Powershift (1990). Toffler was born in New York City on October 4, 1928. He attended New York University and graduated with a degree in sociology in 1950. He then worked as a journalist for several magazines, including Fortune and The Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s, Toffler began to focus on the effects of technology on society. He wrote Future Shock in 1970, which became a bestseller and was translated into more than 40 languages. In 1980, Toffler published The Third Wave, which argued that the world was entering a new era of post-industrial society. He wrote several other books, including Powershift (1990), which discussed the shift of power from nation-states to corporations, and Revolutionary Wealth (2006), which discussed the implications of the digital revolution. Toffler was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. He died on June 27, 2016, at the age of 87.
