Through the Freedom Forum, he founded the Forum's museum of journalism and media, The Newseum, dedicated to the history of news. The Newseum opened in 1997, first in Rosslyn, Virginia, before its' 2008 reopening in a newly constructed building in Washington, DC.

His third wife, Rachel Fornes, was a chiropractor, and after their 1993 marriage, they adopted six children.

After retiring as Chairman and CEO of The Gannett Company in 1989, he continued to write a weekly newspaper column called "Plain Talk" until 2010, after which the column continued to appear sporadically until just before his death in 2013.
