Alfred Russel Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, and biologist. He is best known for independently proposing a theory of natural selection which prompted Charles Darwin to publish his own theory. Wallace was one of the leading evolutionary thinkers of the 19th century and made many important contributions to the development of evolutionary theory. He wrote extensively on the subject of evolution and was a strong advocate for the idea of natural selection. Wallace was born in Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales, on 8 January 1823. He was the eighth of nine children of Thomas Vere Wallace and Mary Anne Greenell. Wallace was educated at Hertford Grammar School and later at Neath Academy. He left school at the age of 14 to become an apprentice to his brother-in-law, a surveyor. Wallace's interest in natural history began at an early age and he soon became an avid collector of specimens. In 1848, he travelled to the Amazon rainforest in search of new species. During this expedition, he collected thousands of specimens and made many important discoveries. In 1858, Wallace and Darwin independently proposed the theory of natural selection. Wallace's paper was presented to the Linnean Society of London in July of that year. Darwin's paper was presented in September. Wallace continued to write and lecture on the subject of evolution and natural selection for the rest of his life. He also wrote extensively on other topics such as spiritualism, socialism, and land reform. Wallace died on 7 November 1913 at the age of 90. He is remembered as one of the most important evolutionary thinkers of the 19th century.
