Alfred H. Mendes was a Trinidadian actor and playwright. He was born on 18 November 1897 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. He was the son of a Portuguese father and a Trinidadian mother. He attended St. Mary's College in Port of Spain and then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Mendes began his career as an actor in the 1920s, appearing in a number of British films. He also wrote plays, including The Black Chiffon (1930) and The White Witch (1931). He was a founding member of the Negro Repertory Company in London, which produced plays by black writers. Mendes returned to Trinidad in the 1940s and became a leading figure in the local theatre scene. He wrote and directed plays, including The White Witch (1941) and The Black Chiffon (1942). He also wrote and directed the film The Invaders (1947). Mendes was a prominent figure in Trinidad's cultural life, and was awarded the Trinity Cross, the highest honour in Trinidad and Tobago, in 1971. He died in Port of Spain in 1975.
