Alex Webb is an American photographer and member of the Magnum Photos agency. He is best known for his vibrant color photography of the streets of the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Born on May 5, 1952, in San Francisco, California, Webb grew up in a family of photographers. His father, David Webb, was a commercial photographer, and his mother, Mary Webb, was a photojournalist. Webb began taking pictures at the age of 10, and by the time he was in high school, he was already developing his own style of photography. After graduating from high school, Webb attended the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied photography and painting. After graduating in 1975, he moved to New York City and began working as a freelance photographer. In 1979, Webb joined Magnum Photos, the prestigious photography agency founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa. Since then, he has traveled extensively, photographing in the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. His work has been featured in numerous publications, including National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, and Life. Webb has received numerous awards for his work, including the Leica Medal of Excellence, the W. Eugene Smith Grant, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.
