Alex Thomson is a British yachtsman who was born on 12 January, 1929 in Bangor, United Kingdom. He is best known for his sailing career, having competed in numerous sailing events and races, including the Vendée Globe, the Volvo Ocean Race, and the Clipper Round the World Race. Thomson began sailing at the age of 12, and by the age of 16 he had already won the British National Championship. He went on to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989-90, and in the Vendée Globe in 1996-97. He also competed in the Volvo Ocean Race in 2001-02, and the Clipper Round the World Race in 2005-06. Thomson has won numerous awards for his sailing achievements, including the Yachtsman of the Year Award in 1996, and the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award in 2002. He is also the founder of the Alex Thomson Racing Team, which has competed in numerous sailing events. Thomson has an estimated net worth of $10 million.
