Aleksandr Askoldov is a Soviet and Russian film director, actor, and screenwriter. He is best known for his 1968 film Commissar, which was banned by the Soviet authorities and only released in 1988. Born in Kiev, Askoldov studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow, graduating in 1959. He began his career as an actor, appearing in several films, including The Cranes Are Flying (1957) and The Unsent Letter (1959). In 1968, Askoldov directed his first feature film, Commissar, which was based on a short story by Vasily Grossman. The film was banned by the Soviet authorities and only released in 1988. In the 1970s, Askoldov worked as a screenwriter and director for television. He wrote and directed several television films, including The Story of a Real Man (1977) and The Story of a Real Man (1978). In the 1980s, Askoldov returned to feature films, directing The Train Has Stopped (1984) and The House I Live In (1986). In the 1990s, Askoldov wrote and directed several television films, including The Last Train (1993) and The Last Train (1995). In recent years, Askoldov has continued to write and direct television films, including The Last Train (1999) and The Last Train (2001).
