Alasdair Gray is an acclaimed Scottish novelist, playwright, artist, and political activist. He is best known for his novel Lanark (1981), which is widely regarded as a classic of Scottish literature. He has also written several plays, short stories, and poetry collections. Gray was born in Riddrie, Glasgow, on 28 December 1934. He attended Glasgow School of Art from 1952 to 1957, and then worked as a scene painter and stage designer for the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. He also worked as a freelance artist and illustrator, and his artwork has been featured in several books and exhibitions. Gray's first novel, Lanark, was published in 1981 and was an immediate success. It has since been translated into several languages and is widely regarded as a classic of Scottish literature. He has since written several other novels, including Poor Things (1992), which won the Whitbread Novel Award, and The Book of Prefaces (2000). Gray has also written several plays, including The Fall of Kelvin Walker (1985) and The Ends of Our Tethers (1993). He has also written several collections of poetry, including 1982 Janine (1984) and A History Maker (1994). Gray has been politically active throughout his career, and has been a vocal critic of the British government's policies on Scotland. He is a member of the Scottish National Party and has been a vocal advocate for Scottish independence.
