Alan Garner is an English novelist best known for his children's fantasy novels and his retellings of traditional British folk tales. He has written several books, including The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, The Owl Service, and Red Shift. He has also written several non-fiction works, including The Voice That Thunders and The Stone Book Quartet. He has won numerous awards, including the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, and the Whitbread Award. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2001 for services to literature. Garner was born in Congleton, Cheshire, England, and grew up in Alderley Edge. He attended Manchester Grammar School and then studied English at Magdalen College, Oxford. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and then as a freelance writer. Garner's first novel, The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, was published in 1960 and was an immediate success. He has since written several more novels, including The Owl Service, Red Shift, and Strandloper. He has also written several non-fiction works, including The Voice That Thunders and The Stone Book Quartet.
