Alan Bean is a former American astronaut and naval officer. He was the fourth person to walk on the moon, and the first to paint a picture of the lunar surface. He was a member of the Apollo 12 mission, and later served as the commander of the Skylab 3 mission. Bean was born in Wheeler, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas in 1955 with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy, and served as a test pilot before being selected as an astronaut in 1963. Bean flew on two space missions, the Apollo 12 mission in 1969, and the Skylab 3 mission in 1973. He was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 12, and the commander of Skylab 3. He logged 1,671 hours in space, and was the fourth person to walk on the moon. After retiring from NASA in 1981, Bean became an artist, painting scenes of the moon and space exploration. He has had numerous exhibitions of his work, and his paintings are held in many private and public collections. Bean was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1983, and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1997. He is also a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and a member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists.
