He is best known for creating the HBO television series Six Feet Under and True Blood, and for writing the Academy Award-winning film American Beauty. Ball was born on May 13, 1957 in Marietta, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia, where he studied playwriting and graduated in 1978. Ball began his career writing for television, working on shows such as Grace Under Fire and Cybill. In 1999, he created the HBO series Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons and earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. In 2008, Ball wrote and directed the film Towelhead, which earned him a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay. He also wrote and produced the HBO series True Blood, which ran for seven seasons and earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. In addition to his television and film work, Ball has written several plays, including Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and All That I Will Ever Be. In 2010 Ball began work on a television adaptation of the crime noir novel The Mystic Arts of Erasing All Signs of Death by Charlie Huston, to be titled All Signs of Death. In December 2010, after several months of pre-production, HBO cancelled production on the project.

His older sister, Mary Ann, was killed in a car accident when Ball was 13; he was in the passenger seat at the time. He attended high school in Marietta before going to college at the University of Georgia and Florida State University. Ball graduated from Florida State in 1980 with a degree in theater arts.
