Alan Ball is an American writer, director, and producer. He is best known for creating the HBO series Six Feet Under and True Blood, and for writing the Academy Award-winning film American Beauty. Ball was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in nearby Marietta. He attended the University of Georgia, where he studied playwriting and was a member of the theater fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater. Ball began his career as a playwright, writing plays such as Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and All That I Will Ever Be. He also wrote for the television series Grace Under Fire and Cybill. In 2001, Ball wrote and directed the film American Beauty, which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. In 2003, Ball created the HBO series Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons and earned him two Emmy Awards. In 2008, Ball created the HBO series True Blood, which ran for seven seasons and earned him two more Emmy Awards. Ball has also written and directed several films, including Towelhead, Uncle Frank, and Here and Now. In 2020, Ball wrote and directed the film Uncle Frank, which was released on Amazon Prime Video. Ball is currently working on a new series for HBO, titled We Are Who We Are.
