McCandless was born on July 23, 1927 in Brawley, California. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1950. He then attended the University of Southern California Law School, where he earned a law degree in 1953. McCandless served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. After his military service, he worked as a lawyer in private practice in Imperial County, California. McCandless was elected to the California State Assembly in 1966, and served until 1972. He was then elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1982, and served until 1993. McCandless is a member of the Republican Party. He is married to his wife, Mary, and has two children. As of 2021, Al McCandless is 90 years old and has a net worth of $2 million.
