Akhil Amar is an American legal scholar and Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale Law School. He is a leading authority on constitutional law, and his work has been cited by Supreme Court justices in their opinions. He is the author of several books, including America's Constitution: A Biography, The Bill of Rights: Creation and Reconstruction, and America's Unwritten Constitution: The Precedents and Principles We Live By. Amar was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He received his B.A. from Yale University in 1980 and his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1984. After graduating from law school, he clerked for Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He then served as a professor at the University of California, Davis School of Law from 1985 to 1994, before joining the faculty at Yale Law School. Amar is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. Friendly Medal. He has also been a visiting professor at Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, and the University of Chicago Law School. 2007

Amar has repeatedly served as a Visiting Professor of Law at Pepperdine School of Law and at Columbia Law School and was recently a visiting professor at University of Pennsylvania Law School. He has also lectured for One Day University. He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007.

1999

In the Winter 1999 edition of the Hofstra Law Review, Amar criticized the Clinton impeachment and stated that it demonstrated how impeachment can be used as a weapon which causes "grave disruption" during elections.

Amar is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College (B.A., 1980) and a graduate of the Yale Law School (J.D. 1984), where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. Amar clerked for future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer when Stephen Breyer was still a judge on the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
