Ahmed Ben Bella was an Algerian revolutionary and statesman who served as the first President of Algeria from 1963 to 1965. He was born on 25 December 1916 in Maghnia, Algeria, to a peasant family. He was educated at the local Quranic school and later attended the Lycee Bugeaud in Algiers. Ben Bella joined the French Army in 1939 and served in World War II, where he was captured by the Germans in 1940 and spent the next five years in a prisoner of war camp. After the war, he returned to Algeria and joined the National Liberation Front (FLN), a political party that sought to end French colonial rule in Algeria. He quickly rose through the ranks of the FLN and became a leader of the Algerian War of Independence. In 1962, Ben Bella was elected as the first President of Algeria and served until 1965, when he was overthrown in a military coup. He was placed under house arrest until 1979, when he was allowed to leave the country. He then lived in exile in Switzerland and France until his death in April 2012. At the time of his death, Ben Bella was estimated to have a net worth of $2 million. He earned his wealth through his political career, as well as through investments in real estate and other business ventures.
