Abebe Bikila was an Ethiopian marathon runner who won the 1960 Olympic marathon in Rome, becoming the first African to win an Olympic gold medal. He also won the 1964 Olympic marathon in Tokyo, becoming the first person to win two Olympic marathons. Bikila was born in Jato, Ethiopia, on 7 August 1932. He was the son of a shepherd and grew up in poverty. He was a member of the Ethiopian Imperial Guard and was trained in running by his commanding officer. Bikila made his international debut at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, where he finished in ninth place. He went on to win the marathon at the 1959 Pan-African Games in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the 1960 Olympic marathon in Rome, becoming the first African to win an Olympic gold medal. He also won the 1964 Olympic marathon in Tokyo, becoming the first person to win two Olympic marathons. Bikila's career was cut short in 1969 when he was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He continued to compete in wheelchair races and won several gold medals at the Paralympic Games. He died in 1973 at the age of 41. Bikila was an inspiration to many and is remembered as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Star of Ethiopia by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1971.
