Yuri Andropov was a Soviet politician and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1982 until his death in 1984. He was born in Nagutskaya, Stavropol Governorate, Russian Empire, and was educated at the Rybinsk Water Transport Technical College and the Leningrad Institute of Railway Engineers. Andropov began his career in the Soviet security services in 1939, and rose to become head of the KGB in 1967. He was appointed to the Politburo in 1973, and was made General Secretary of the Communist Party in 1982. Andropov's tenure as General Secretary was marked by a period of increased repression and a focus on economic reform. He also sought to improve relations with the West, and was instrumental in the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 1987. Andropov died in 1984, and was succeeded by Konstantin Chernenko. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the October Revolution.
