William Elliott Whitmore is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Lee County, Iowa. He has released eight studio albums and two live albums. He is known for his distinctive voice and his blend of blues, folk, and country music. Whitmore was born on May 11, 1978 in Lee County, Iowa. He was raised on a farm and began playing music at an early age. He learned to play the guitar and banjo from his father, and began writing songs at the age of 12. Whitmore released his debut album, Hymns for the Hopeless, in 2002. The album was well-received and earned him a nomination for the Americana Music Association's Emerging Artist of the Year award. He has since released seven more studio albums, including Animals in the Dark (2006), Ashes to Dust (2008), Field Songs (2011), Radium Death (2013), and Kilonova (2017). Whitmore has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and has performed at festivals such as Bonnaroo, SXSW, and the Newport Folk Festival.
