Vladimir Ashkenazy is a Russian-Icelandic pianist and conductor. He is one of the most renowned and respected pianists of the 20th century. He has won numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the British Empire, the Order of the White Eagle, and the Order of the Polar Star. Vladimir Ashkenazy was born on 6 July 1937 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. He began studying piano at the age of six and made his debut with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of twelve. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1960 and went on to become a professor at the same institution. In 1963, Ashkenazy moved to London and began performing internationally. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and has made numerous recordings. He has also conducted several orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2004 he started a three-year contract as Music Director of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, Japan. Vladimir Ashkenazy is currently President of the Rachmaninoff Society. His interpretations of piano concertos by Sergei Rachmaninoff are among the best. He also made many other critically acclaimed recordings of piano music including all concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven. He received several Grammy awards as well as other international awards and prizes for his studio recordings and concert performances.
