Vincent Canby was an American film and theatre critic who worked for The New York Times from 1969 until his retirement in the early 1990s. He was born on July 27, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Canby was a graduate of the University of Chicago and served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times before joining The New York Times in 1969. Canby was known for his thoughtful and often humorous reviews of films and plays. He was also a frequent guest on television talk shows, including The Dick Cavett Show and The Today Show. Canby was married to actress and playwright Penelope Gilliatt from 1965 until her death in 1993. He died on October 15, 2000 in Manhattan, New York, USA. He was 76 years old.
