Václav Klaus is a Czech politician and economist who served as the second President of the Czech Republic from 2003 to 2013. He was also the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1992 to 1997. Klaus was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on 19 June 1941. He studied at the University of Economics in Prague, graduating in 1963 with a degree in economics. He then went on to earn a doctorate in economics from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1968. Klaus began his political career in the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, but left the party in 1989. He then joined the Civic Forum, a political movement that helped to bring about the Velvet Revolution and the end of communism in Czechoslovakia. Klaus served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 1992 to 1997. He was then elected President of the Czech Republic in 2003, and served in that role until 2013. Klaus is a controversial figure in Czech politics. He is a strong advocate of free-market economics and has been criticized for his opposition to the European Union and his support for authoritarian regimes. Klaus is married to Livia Klausová, and they have two children.
