Tyne Daly is an American actress, singer, and writer. She is best known for her roles in the television series Cagney & Lacey, Judging Amy, and The Closer. She has won six Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, and has been nominated for an Academy Award. Daly was born in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Mary Hope (née Newell) and actor James Daly. She has two sisters, Mary Glynn and Pegeen Michael. She attended high school at The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia, and graduated in 1964. She attended Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she studied theater. Daly began her career on stage in summer stock in New York. She made her Broadway debut in the 1968 production of That Summer – That Fall. She was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in The Seagull in 1971. She went on to star in several Broadway productions, including The Three Sisters, The Royal Family, and The Shadow Box. Daly's film career began in the 1970s, with roles in such films as The Enforcer, The Savage Is Loose, and The Great Gatsby. She also appeared in the television movie The Execution of Private Slovik. In 1981, Daly began her most famous role, as Detective Mary Beth Lacey in the television series Cagney & Lacey. The series ran for seven seasons, and Daly won six Emmy Awards for her performance. She also received two Golden Globe Awards and a People's Choice Award for her work on the show. In 1999, Daly began her role as Judge Amy Gray in the television series Judging Amy. The series ran for six seasons, and Daly received two Emmy Award nominations for her performance. In 2005, Daly began her role as Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson in the television series The Closer. The series ran for seven seasons, and Daly received two Emmy Award nominations for her performance.
