He is a prominent advocate for intersex rights and has been a vocal advocate for the rights of intersex people since the 1990s. Briffa is a graduate of the University of Malta and holds a degree in law. He has worked as a lawyer, a lecturer, and a consultant. He is also a published author and has written several books on intersex rights and gender identity. Briffa was elected mayor of the City of Hobsons Bay in Australia in 2009, becoming the first intersex mayor in the world. He served as mayor until 2012. Briffa is a member of the International Intersex Forum and is a founding member of the Intersex Trust Aotearoa New Zealand.
